In just one movie, I used up five old women of my life. I played women with an age range of 60 to 90 years of age. I emptied my trunk of old women in this movie–Oscar-nominated Fernanda Montenegro on her role.

Should the fans be considered co-creators of the film Says Jackson: “Who wants to see a bland title like “Pacific Air 121″ People either want to see a plane full of deadly-ass snakes, or not.”

Amusing episodes occurred on the set, when Anthony Quinn claimed to have heard Paul Gauguin, the character her played, speaking to him. One day, Quinn turned his head but saw nothing, so he placed the wine bottle back on the table. Then, a deep voice warned him again, “Don‚Äôt do that.”

The underlying question the film asks is: If you can still be a kind of lackadaisical, cynical, wise-ass in your 30s, or if you have to in some way grow up, and, how you do that while still being who you are.

The intermingling of intimacy and society has always intrigued me. But the intimate is even more intimate here, for we are dealing with the notion of the couple itself, which raises the questions of one’s relationship to the body, desire and sexuality, and even politics in a more general manner (dictatorship, violence, North/South relations).
