This semi-documentary noir begins ominously with a voice-over of the treasury department, informing the viewers of what the unit does.
The narrative proper then starts when an elderly woman tries to deposit a $20 bill at the bank, which turns out to be phony.
Trying to track down and stop of counterfeiting ring, the department uses a counterfeiter namd Tris Stewart (Bridges), serving time in prison. he is released under the agreement that he will assist in capturing the printers of the phony money.
Once out of jail, Stewart meets up with mysterious cigarette girl, Meg Dixon (Barbara Payton).
