Ireland (‘The Quiet Girl’)

Colm Bairéad’s feature debut has already made history in Ireland, where it became the first Irish-language film to win the Irish Academy Award for best film (among seven awards overall) and smashed box office records.
It’s a coming-of-age drama about a neglected, silent child (played by newcomer Catherine Clinch) sent to live with distant relatives on a farm in the summer of 1981 and the family secrets she would discover.
The Quiet Girl has been met with widespread critical acclaim since it bowed in Berlin’s Generation Kplus sidebar (where it won the grand prix for best film) and has the potential to gather some sizable momentum.
