I Am Not Your Negro (2016)
Raoul Peck’s film makes a crucial contribution to the rediscovery of James Baldwin, a writer of blistering clarity and prescience, who, for some reason, remains unknown, especially by younger viewers and readers.
His documentary digs deep into the complexities of American divisions, as Baldwin did in his dissections of race and identity and his warnings, fueled by love and rage, about “moral apathy, the death of the heart.”
Peck’s starting point and main text is a manuscript left unfinished when Baldwin died in 1987.
