There are direct echoes of and references to Hitchcock’s 1940 Rebecca.
And the movie is sort of a forerunner of Hitchcock’s 1958 Vertigo. In both films, the detectives are fascinated by a woman whom they believe to be dead, but who turns out to be alive.
Spectators look at Laura as others do. There are two main controlling figures and their POV manipulate our own view. Laura’s submission to McPherson gaze and our own. Once Mcpherson is identified as the protagonist, Laura must submit to him in order to bring closure to the romance.
