Is That Black Enough for You?!?
Elvis Mitchell’s documentary tells the story of Black cinema during a crucial decade, from 1968 to 1978, when Black actors, Black stories and Black talent behind the camera exploded, in mainstream Hollywood and in independent film.
As Black artists began to take command in diverse genres — actions movies, historical dramas, films noirs, musicals, indie love stories — the Black film movement ran parallel to the New Hollywood, with new voices overthrowing old strictures.
Mitchell, 67, a vet critic and interviewer who is Black, uses clips to create a sort of a film diary and film essay, inviting the audience to share in the transformational significance that these movies had invoked in him.
