In trying to explain the film’s continuous appeal, co-writer Buck Henry said: “It expresses a feeling that does not have any reference to any particular time, which is part of its success. I don’t think it’s locked in any time zone. It certainly doesn’t talk about specifics of any decade. It’s about a feeling that a lot of people have at a certain age. It has cliches, like grown-ups are the enemy. But it’s a cliche that’s been around for hundred years.”
