Few thrillers from the 1970s have left viewers as stunned and speechless as director John Boorman’s Deliverance, depicting a Southern canoeing trip into the depths of hell.
The film’s budget was so low that Burt Reynolds and other cast members had to perform their own stunts. That work left them severely roughed up by the end of the shoot.
The movie contains at least two harrowing sequences: a long, graphic scene of male rape and a “Dueling Banjos” music scene with haunting melody.
