All Quiet on the Western Front became a television film produced by ITC Entertainment. It was released on November 14, 1979.
Based on the 1928 book of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque, it stars Richard Thomas and Ernest Borgnine.
Directed by Delbert Mann (better known for the 1955 Oscar winner, Marty) this film was joint British-American production, with most of the shoot taking place in Czechoslovakia.
In 1915, Paul Bäumer, 18, enlists in the German army with five high school friends (Behm, Kropp, Muller, Kemmerich and Leer), after being indoctrinated by Kantorek, their teacher, about the glorious superiority of German culture.
After training camp under the brutal Corporal Himmelstoss, the young men board a troop train bound for the front line. Ominously, they notice another train arriving in town with returning wounded soldiers, who are carried off on stretchers.
Once at the front line, they are placed in a squad, along with soldiers Tjaden, Westhus, Detering and others, under the supervision of Stanislaus “Kat” Katzinsky. Kat teaches them how to take cover, how to find extra food, and other survival skills.
When Paul and his squad return to a French town for a rest week, they see the new recruits have grown younger and younger. The leader of new recruits is their recently demoted training NCO, Himmelstoss. When Himmelstoss tries to make them obey, they stand up to him.
In the trenches, while the Germans are launching an attack, Paul sees another squad cowering in a crater, which includes Himmelstoss. Paul forces Himmelstoss to keep on the offensive.
Final Sequence:
Paul writes a letter to Kropp, the sole survivor, who is now an amputee. He then walks through the trench checking on the younger soldiers, having taken up Kat’s position as mentor. Spotting a bird, he begins to sketch it, and when the bird flies away, and as Paul stands up to see where it went, a sniper’s shot kills him.
A field communique from German High Command over Paul’s lifeless body declaring “All Quiet on the Western Front.” The communique’s date is October 11, 1918, exactly one month before the Armistice of November 11, 1918.

Adapted from Erich Maria Remarque’s 1928 novel, Lewis Milestone’s All Quiet on the Western Front follows young German soldiers faced with the horrors of World War I.
The film abandons any sort of romanticism in its depiction of war, instead showcasing the pointlessness, dehumanization and the brutal effect on the soldiers’ physical and mental conditions.
With groundbreaking cinematography, sound and visual effects, “All Quiet” became a blueprint for future (anti) war films.
