French Algerian director Rachid Bouchareb, an Oscar nominee for the 2006 war drama Days of Glory, combines documentary and fiction in his latest feature, Algeria.
The film revisits and links together two separate incidents of police violence in France.
One, the killing of Malik Oussekine in 1986 amid huge student protests, became cause célèbre and rallying cry for institutional reform.
The other death, of Abdel Benyahia, killed by a drunk off-duty police officer on the same night as Oussekine, has been nearly completely forgotten.
