Humphrey Bogart was not as tall as Western heroes, Gary Cooper or John Wayne, who conveyed moral superiority through their physical attributes, their height, weight, and towering stature.
On the other hand, Bogart was not as short as James Cagney or Edward G. Robinson
Bogart was of average height, short enough to share a gangster’s pugnaciousness; and tall enough to convey a westerner’s moral dignity.
Bogart was able to participate actively in the creation of his characters by drawing on a wide range of physical gestures, expressions, movements.
