Years before “Girls” and “Broad City,” Claudia Weill directed future “Thirtysomething” star Melanie Mayron in the poignant “Girlfriends,” the story of New York city roommates who grow apart.

After making one more feature, “It’s My Turn,” she turned to teaching, with occasional forays into television directing on similarly observant shows such as “Thirtysomething,” “Girls” and “Once and Again.”
