Directors: Brest, Martin–Career Problems after Successful Run

Martin Brest capped his career with “Gigli” in 2003 and has rarely been heard from since.

Paul Thomas Anderson interviewed him while showing his hit films “Midnight Run” and “Beverly Hills Cop,” but tellingly, the subject of what Brest was up to was never raised.

In addition to “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Midnight Run,” the commercially-minded director had notable titles with “Going in Style” and Al Pacino starring “Scent of a Woman” (and the less-well-received “Meet Joe Black”).

Then tragedy struck: the Ben Affleck-Jennifer Lopez starring Gigli misfired and lost millions, causing a critical backlash that had some calling it “the worst movie ever.”
