Oscar Actors: Ritter, Thelma–One of Great Oscar Losers–Six Acting Nominations

Thelma Ritter is one of the Academy’s greatest losers, having been nominated six times, but never winning.

Her nominations include great performances in With a Song in My Heart (1952), Pickup on Main Street (1953), and Pillow Talk (1959).

After her fourth consecutive nomination, Ritter observed: “Now I know what it feels like to be the bridesmaid and never the bride.”

In many of her films, such as Hitchcock’s Rear Window (1954), she played the acerbic, lower-class sidekick, who always speak out her mind.
