Inaugural edition of the Directors Fortnight, under the direction of Pierre-Henri Deleau, who will embody its spirit for the next 30 years.
With the slogan «Cinema at liberty», the event is put together in barely two months.
Finally, 62 feature films and 26 shorts are programmed and screened.
Free public screenings are held at the Rex and Olympia theaters, in the rue d’Antibes, while the “Malmaison” serves as the Fortnight’s Cannes headquarters.
The opening film, chosen at random when the print of the scheduled film doesn’t arrive on time, is Cuban: Manuel Octavio Gomez‘s, La primera carga al machete, which enjoys a huge public success and is picked up by a Japanese buyer immediately after the screening.
