Abortion on Screen: Lingui, the Sacred Bonds (2021): Chadian Director Mahamet-Saleh Haroun’s Meditative Drama (Mother-Daughter)

Set in 1987 Romania, during the height of the country’s authoritarian regime, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,  Cristian Mungiu’s 2007 Palme d’Or winner follows a young woman’s incredible struggles to get an illegal abortion.

At the heart of Eleanor Bergstein’s tale is a clear and unapologetic argument for reproductive choice, or put more bluntly, getting abortion as soon as possible.

“We don’t really think of this as a reboot of the movie as much as a kind of reimagining of these stories,” Graham says. “It all comes from real history. Part of why people at first might not think that is because we don’t really tell joyful stories about queer people at this point in history.”
