Almereyda’s best-known feature, Hamlet in 2000, was a modern adaptation of Shakespeare, set in contemporary New York. In addition to Ethan Hawke in the title role, the cast included Bill Murray, Kyle MacLachlan, Julia Styles, Live Schreiber, and Sam Shepard.

Robert Donat's first nomination was for The Citadel, as the struggling doctor, but he lost out to Spencer Tracy in Boys Town. In the following year, this was “corrected” and Donat received the award for a nobler, but no better, performance in Goodbye, Mr. Chips.

At the end of Olivia De Havilland's seven-year contract, Warner refused to release her, demanding that the contract be extended to include the duration of her suspensions. De Havilland sued, winning a landmark victory with a court's decision setting the outside limit of a player's contract at seven years, including suspensions. Absent from the screen for three years, Dee Havilland celebrated her comeback with an Oscar for To Each His Own.
