Cunningham, Merce: Avant-Garde Choreographer Dies at 90

July 27, 2009–Merce Cunningham, the famed avant-garde dancer and choreographer, has died at age 90.  A spokeswoman for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Leah Sandals, says Cunningham died on Sunday at his Manhattan home of natural causes.

Varda, Agnes: French New Wave Filmmaker

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the French New Wave, which revolutionized the world of cinema and had a major impact on the New Hollywood.

In her new, terrifically engaging docu “The Beaches of Agnès” (“Les Plages d'Agnès”), vet French filmmaker Agnès Varda (born May 30, 1928) takes a long look back at her life and art by revisiting her favorite beaches.   A touching personal memoir, with moving recollections of her late husband Jacques Demy (who died of AIDS), “Beaches” also serves an informal history of the New Wave, of which Varda was a co-founder and the only significant female member.

 

Indie Companies: Here Films Distributes I Killed My Mother

June 29, 2009 – Here Media announced today the launch of Here Films, the new acquisition and distribution division of Here Media, Inc.   All current staff of Regent Releasing will be folded into the newly formed parent company Here Media effective immediately.  Here Films staff will oversee all remaining Regent releases through 2009 with all new films being released through the Here Films banner.  Here Films recently acquired several high profile films including Cannes Directors’ Fortnight winner “I Killed My Mother” (J’ai tué ma mère), Berlin Silver Bear Winner “About Elly” (Darbareye Elly), and the Kenneth Branagh made for cinema opera “The Magic Flute.” Here Films will distribute all these pictures in select U.S. theaters, on DVD and via here! Networks in 2010.
