I will not trade one shot of Orson Welles for the entire oeuvre of Fred Zinnemann.

Fred Zinnemann's centennial is next week (he was born in Vienna April 29, 2007), but I will not be surprised if the centennary goes completely unremarked (and unnoticed) by critics and cineastes. It's hard to think of another director who had fallen so quickly from grace as Zinnemann, despite promising and even brilliant beginnings.

Stewart Stern, twice Oscar-nominated screenwriter and Emmy-winning TV writer, who wrote the classic “Rebel Without a Cause,” Dennis Hopper’s “The Last Movie” and telepic “Sybil,” starring Sally Field, died February 2, 2015. He was 92.
