There are about a dozen feature films, documentaries, and shorts directed by African Americans at this year's Sundance Film Festival. See List below

Jan 17, 2007–No less than 52 films at this year's Sundance Festival are directed by women, which is something of a record. Of the 16 features in the dramatic competition, three are femme-helmed: Zoe Cassavetes' Broken English, Deborah Kempmeir's Hounddog, and Gina Kim's Never Forever.

The one film that created the greatest buzz this year was Quentin Tarantino's stunning debut, Reservoir Dogs (Miramax release), which won the prestigious international critics award for best first film. The jury praised Tarantino for “a spectacular debut that combines a brilliant narrative sense, and expressive use of space, and an insightful direction of actors.”

After the chaos and madness of the Cannes Film festival in May, and the dull, lackluster AFI-L.A. Festival in July, it was sheer pleasure to be a guest of the Toronto Festival of Festivals. The 18th edition, which concluded last week, was just as good as the 17th one: About 300 movies, representing 46 national cinemas were screened during the ten-day event.

The Sundance Film Festival has screened experimental work since its inception more than twenty years ago and now New Frontier builds on the foundation of the Frontier section launched in 1996 to highlight films that push the boundaries of the traditional aesthetics and narrative structures of filmmaking.
