Sundance Institute and NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) today announced the winners of the 2009 Sundance/NHK International Filmmakers Awards. The four winners were selected from 12 finalists by members of an international jury which included: Ira Sachs, Yesim Ustaoglu, Katherine Dieckmann, Fernando Eimbcke, Sebastian Cordero, and Ronan Bennett; and a Japanese Jury that included Masato Harada, Bong-Ou Lee, and Hiroyuki Takazawa.

The Grand Jury Prize: U.S. Documentary was presented to We Live in Public,directed by Ondi Timoner. The film portrays the story of the Internet's revolutionary impact on human interaction as told through the eyes of maverick web pioneer, Josh Harris, and his transgressive art project that shocked New York. The Grand Jury Prize: U.S. Dramatic was presented to Push: Based on the novel by Sapphire, directed by Lee Daniels and written by Damien Paul. The film tells the redemptive story of Precious Jones, a young girl in Harlem struggling to overcome tremendous obstacles and discover her own voice.
Sundance Film Fest 2009: Spread, Mackenzie's Comedy Acquired

Jan 23, 2009–Overture's Anchor Bay has bought U.S. and Australian rights to David Mackenzie's comedy “Spread,” starring Ashton Kutcher for around $3.5 million. The movie premiered this week at the Sundance Film Festival.

IFC Films, one of the leading American distributors for independent and foreign films, has acquired U.S. distribution rights to IN THE LOOP, a comedy about politics set in London and Washington. Directed by acclaimed British comedy writer, Armando Iannucci and written by the team who created the award-winning BBC TV series “In The Thick of It” and produced by Kevin Loader and Adam Tandy, IN THE LOOP stars James Gandolfini, Peter Capaldi, Tom Hollander, Gina McKee, Mimi Kennedy, David Rasche, Chris Addison, Anna Chlumsky and Steve Coogan. The film had its World Premiere in the Premieres section at the Sundance Film Festival.

Jan 20, 2009–Magnolia has acquired worldwide rights to Lynn Shelton's “Humpday,” a lo-fi buddy comedy that generated a small bidding war. The film stars Mark Duplass and Joshua Leonard as two straight best friends who filmed themselves having sex for an art project.
