Oscar 2011: Best Foreign-Language Film

Norway is hoping that the dark sex comedy Happy, Happy from first time director Anne Sewitsky will give it first Foreign Language Oscar nomination in 10 years. Norway’s Oscar committee picked Happy, Happy from a short list of three features – the others being Joachim Trier’s Oslo, August 31 and Sons of Norway from Jens Lien – to represent the country in the 2012 Oscar race.

Argentine-Swiss drama “Back to Stay” (“Abrir Puertas y Ventanas”) received two Locarno Leopards Saturday evening when first-time director Milagros Mumenthaler picked up the best film prize and her lead thesper Maria Canale took the top actress award.

Argentinian-Swiss film Abrir puertas y ventanas (“Back to Stay) has won Locarno’s Golden Leopard grand prize. Milagros Mumenthaler’s tale of three sisters dealing with the death of the grandmother who had raised them was also the Fipresci critics’ choice for Best Film. Maria Canale picked up Best Actress for her performance as one of the sisters.
